As the pinnacle of the McLarney brand the R500 is a full ready to race Kit aimed at the BRCA Superbike class. Designed to be competitive from the start the bike includes many of the bespoke and unique parts needed to compete at the top level in the top class.
Design and Features
The R500 shares many parts with the Type-C but has some notable upgrades and improvements to set is aside from the rest.
The newly designed swing arm is the most noticeable, now made out of black Delrin and having a 'split-pivot' design for the layshaft and swing arm pivot. It allows for a smoother power delivery when accelerating or braking stopping the 'Jacking' effect a Superbike motor has on the bike. As with its sister the Type-C, a predictable and controllable bike is vital to putting in fast times on the track.
A cable operated front disk brake is an essential item for the Superbike class so we have included it in the kit, this allows you to spend the time and money running the bike and investing in other items essential items. The brake uses a Delrin disk against Delrin pads to give a positive feel to the braking force allowing for later braking while maintaining confidence. The brake caliper is secured to the bottom of fork legs with an aluminium bracket and has a micro- adjust to set the pad spacing help and balance the front brake to the ESC brake, the adjustment is also used as the pads wear and so need to be altered to maintain brake force.
New to the R500 is the horizontal arrangement of the rear shock instead of the usual vertical mount. By implementing this it changes the wheel to shock travel ratio to a more manageable level and so maximizing the effect that the damper has on the performance of the bike. The top of the shock mounts to the servo housing with a captive bolt while the lower mount attaches to the Delrin swing arm riser. The lower shock cap and swing arm riser are pre-drilled to allow multiple mounting positions which will adjust the ride height without altering with the shock body or spacing the internals of the shock
One of the many hidden parts on this bike is the headstock, this is an important item and has a massive effect on the handling and performance if the bike. In designing this part we decided to save weight and go with a milled delrin block with an oversized bearing housing instead of the usual aluminium. Four bearings, two top and two bottom are used in the headstock to reduce the pressure on each of the bearings and prolong the life of the kingpin.
Construction
Made from lightweight aircraft grade aluminum the main metallic parts like the swing arm hangers, Bracing pieces and spacers are designed on a advanced CAD system then milled or turned on the latest CAM machinery. From this manufacturing method the resultant parts are of high tolerance and high quality professional finish.
For the carbon fibre parts a CSC material was used. This is a composite made from Carbon and Silica or glass fibres. The glass fibre is used as a filling between layers of Carbon, this method of construction allows us to utilise the excellent strength and stiffness properties of Carbon fibre at the more critical outside surfaces of the part, whilst using the superior toughness and lower cost glass fibre as the center to the sandwich.
The final material used in the R500 is DuPont's Delrin, this material was selected for its hardness, mechanical strength, low friction co-efficient and good abrasion resistance when compared with other engineering plastics.
